Web design across Northern Ireland

A small, closely connected market with a growing technology sector and cross-border trade to account for.

Northern Ireland is a compact market where business networks overlap heavily. Belfast dominates, with Derry, Lisburn, Newry and Ballymena forming the secondary centres, and agriculture and food production significant throughout.

Belfast has built a genuine technology and professional services sector, and expectations there are comparable with any UK city. Elsewhere, agriculture, manufacturing, construction and tourism lead.

Cross-border trade with the Republic is routine for many businesses, which raises practical website questions: currency, delivery, VAT treatment and whether the site speaks to a customer in Donegal as readily as one in Antrim.

Two smaller details catch websites out here. People frequently search by county rather than town — Antrim, Down, Armagh, Tyrone, Fermanagh — so a site naming only cities quietly misses them. And the second city is called Derry by some and Londonderry by others, which is worth deciding deliberately rather than by accident: use the form your own customers use, and use it consistently.

What we noticeIf you sell into the Republic, the site should handle currency, delivery and tax clearly rather than leaving the customer to guess. If you do not, say so plainly and save everyone the enquiry.
