Websites for financial advisers
Independent or restricted, and how you are paid. Answer both immediately.
Prospective clients have been told to ask two questions: whether the adviser is independent or restricted, and how they are paid. Most adviser websites answer neither clearly.
Answering both openly, near the top, converts the informed client who is doing exactly what the guidance told them to do, and reassures the uninformed one who is worried about being sold something.
What your customers want answered
- Are you independent or restricted
- How are you paid — fee, percentage, or commission
- What is your minimum, and would you take me on
- What are you authorised to advise on
- What protection do I have if something goes wrong
Point clients at the registerFirms giving financial advice must be authorised by the Financial Conduct Authority, and anyone can check a firm and its permissions on the Financial Services Register. Inviting clients to verify you, and explaining the protection that authorisation brings, is a confidence signal that unauthorised competitors cannot match.
Hiding the minimum
Many practices only work with clients above a certain level of assets, and not saying so wastes everybody's time. Being explicit is kinder and improves the quality of enquiries considerably.
