This is a waterproofing job with a room attached. Sell the system and the guarantee.

Customers think they are buying a room. What they are actually buying is a waterproofing system that has to keep working for decades below ground, and a structure that has been altered without endangering the house above.

Firms that present it as interior work compete on price with anybody who owns a digger. Firms that present it as waterproofing engineering compete on competence, which is a much better market to be in.

What your customers want answered

  1. How will you keep it dry, and what happens if it leaks
  2. What guarantee is there, and is it insurance backed
  3. Does this need structural work, and who designs it
  4. Do I need planning permission and party wall agreements
  5. How much disruption is there to the rest of the house

Name the waterproofing approachExplaining the recognised types of below-ground waterproofing — barrier, structurally integral, and drained cavity systems with a sump and pump — and saying which you use and why, tells an informed customer you work to the British Standard rather than by habit. Maintenance and pump servicing belong in the same conversation.

Silence about what happens when a pump fails

It is the question every careful customer has. Explaining battery backup, alarms and servicing intervals turns the sector's biggest worry into a reason to choose you.

One message is enough to start. I’ll read it and reply myself, usually with a couple of questions and a clear price.
